15 November 1891 — Trent
Sunday. 15th November [1891]. Had our early breakfast in our room at 8.30 after which I dressed. At 11 the Empress sent up Countess Kne                the young lady friend of Pss Margaret to ask me to go for a walk with them. Off we trudged thro’ the town thro constant showers of fine rain—we walked along the side of the railway line on the way back & they took me into the piazza which is so beautiful & picturesque with its frescoed houses. Henry remained at home correcting his preface on Morelli’s book. I copied out some for him. We lunched with the Empress at one oclock– Her real dinner but a light one– When we came down to lunch she informed us of the death of old Lady Westminster wh was announced in the Times she had today received. Said she remembered her well. I am very sorry for my brother Merthyr & his wife with whom the old lady lived. At 3 we went out driving Henry & I in the carriage with the Empress—Ct Wedel & Css Kn                with Princess Margaret following. We drove along the Fersina torrent & got out & walked a good way up the hill– It was still showery & when we got to the top of the pass & got a view into the Val Sugana we turned the carriages & drove back to Trent & had 5 oclock tea with the Empress. I then read to Henry aloud Nivernais memoires and we supped at 8—a very frugal meal. Played Halma with Pss Margaret & Ct Wedel & Css Kn                and we were dismissed at 10. Ct Seckendorff came up to our room to smoke & have lemonade & we went to bed abt 11.30. Just as we returned from our drive a telegram was put into the Empress’ hands wh she said was from the Prince of Wales to say his son Prince George has an attack of typhoid in a mild form wh is rather alarming news.
