16 November 1891 — Trent
Monday. 16th November [1891]. It was pouring when we woke but as the day went on it became a little finer & the Empress sent for me to walk with her at 11– Henry remained at home. I went with HM & Pss Margaret and Ct Seckendorff & we had with us Herr Oesterreicher the former owner of this hotel—a self made man who has a villa here & accompanies H.M. in all her expeditions. He took us round the streets of the town to see the old houses & we made a long walk at a great pace for the Empress is in very good training. We came home by ¼ to 1 & went down to lunch with H.M. The walk was very muddy & showery but it was warm. After lunch we went for drive as yesterday only with Ct Seckendorff instead of Wedel. We went on the road to Riva & walked most of the way over the pass. Henry remained in the carriage until we turned to go down hill when he also walked. It was very wet underfoot & there were great clouds in the valley but there was not much rain. We returned home by 5 o’cl tea—& afterwards Henry & I retired to our room & I read aloud. We took Herr Oesterreicher out in the afternoon & he went in the carriage with Pss Margaret. There was a great deal of fresh fallen snow on the hills round. Supped at 8—& Halma. At 10 Seckendorff came up & sat with us till 11.30. The Empress said at tea that when she looked at Henry she thought of Pss Victoria who when the Crown Prince her father used to say “I have got white hairs coming I must pull them out”—used to say “Oh Papa dont—only think when your hair gets as white as Sir Henry Layard’s how pretty you will look!” & the Empress added “And he never lived to have white hair!”
