8 December 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 8th [December 1891]. I painted for Maria a sprig of euonymous with its red berries wh we brought from the Lido yesterday. I did not go out but after lunch wrote a lot of letters. Signor Tirindelli came to tea & told us how he had been to England to the Birmingham Festival & his surprise how splendidly music was done in our country. He also enlarged on the wonders of London—its size &c &c. Ola dined with Mme Hurtado. Mrs Burr & Isabel Scobell dined with us. Henry took Ruth, Maria & Isabel to the Rossini to hear the Cavelleria Rusticana. I remained chatting with Mrs Burr till 11 o’cl when they returned. Today the telegrams announce the betrothal of the Duke of Clarence to Pss May of Teak a marriage which will be generally popular in England as the bride is English.
