23 January 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 23rd January [1892]. I got up after breakfast. Wrote letters. Henry made arrangements with Mr Fenile abt the funeral & telegraphed to Mr Higford Mrs Burr’s eldest son to ask when the funeral was to be– But all preparations were made in case the family wished to have her carried home. The law here obliges the body to be carried away in 24 hours—so it will be taken to the cemetery tomorrow at 5 A.M. Mr Higford answered that the funeral was to be here—& he was coming out– We expected he had left last night—or this morning– We kept Isabel in bed as we did not want her to return to see Mrs Burr today as the influenza of which she died is so infectious—she was not either fit to go– She received telegrams from her sisters—& Mellony a’Court offers her a home– I went out with Henry in afternoon– Miss Sharp came to see Isabel & I asked her to dine but she said she would dine with us tomorrow. Ola remained with Isabel to take care of her– After dinner Henry was playing patience & I writing in the drawing room when hearing running overhead I went up & found Isabel fainting & Ola & Regina trying to revive her– She had taken too a hot bath. We soon brought her round & got her to bed–
