24 January 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 24th January [1892]. At 5 this morning dear Mrs Burr was taken to the cemetery. Miss Sharp told me afterwards that she got up to see it from her window that it was done quietly and reverently just as St Marks struck the hour—& as soon as the barge was in movement a neighbouring church bell began to ring out as tho’ for Mrs Burr. I woke from sleep just about that time & lay thinking of her taking her last journey down the Grand Canal & at that moment perhaps passing our very house. She who was so fond of us & of Venice—& I thought she would have been content to lie at Venice had we been able to consult her. Ola & I went to church in the morng & met Mr Lowther & Mr Farnall there. I went to enquire after Mrs Mackie & had a bad report. After lunch I went out with Henry to the Eden’s garden & took a walk there. Mr Eden was there & says Carrie still keeps her bed with a bad cold. Ola took out Isabel for a row in the sandolo. The weather was splendid. Mrs Burr’s maid Bertha came to our house today to join Isabel. Miss Sharp dined with us & also Mr Hodgson; former had a very bad cold. Ola & Isabel dined upstairs in my studio. Henry began to play Patience & it was nearly 12 before we went up to bed. I had occasion to go to the kitchen for a biscuit & fancying I heard voices I went down in my dressing gown & opened the pantry door—there I found the cook Bertha & Rosa & Paolo all seated & having wine. I scattered the party very much displeased. Dr Mackie wrote to tell me his wife died this afternoon.
