17 February 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 17th February [1892]. I had a bad night & woke with headache but I got up & went about my work as usual—but I could not do much. I was practising the guitar with Ola’s mandola acct when Miss Ponsonby came in with Lady Alexr Lyndon Lennox to see our pictures. Miss Metila Ponsonby had turned up yesterday afternoon & told us she was travelling with Ly Alexr who had just lost her husband & was looking for a stone figure of the Virgin to use in a monument to him– He was a ’vert & a very strong one– She a born R.C. It was just lunch time when they left– Directly after lunch I went to Olga Montenegro’s & found she was out at the Russian church having gone with Mlle Valmarana to pray over her mother’s coffin. I found that Mlle Aspasie was in bed with fever & the old lady also in bed & very feeble. I waited till after Olga returned & to see if she wished to see me– She said not so I went away. I found she does not require my maid to go with her to Montenegro as Mme Jonin who accompanies her has a maid she will take with her. I went to call on the Prefet’s wife it being her day—found there a few people—but did not stay as I had to go to Mme Albrizzi’s day. My head ached so I could not stay & so came home to tea– I found Carrie Eden here & Mme Hurtado. Mme Persico also came. Mme Hurtado stayed till 6. Henry & Ola dined at 7 & went to the Fenice to hear Verdi’s Otello. They came home early saying it had been a great fiasco as the Tenor had been hooted & hissed & the public wd hardly allow the opera to proceed. I went to bed at 7 being worn out–
