18 February 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 18th February [1892]. Woke refreshed– Went at 11 to Palazzo Molin & found that Mlle Aspasie was ill. Dr Fasci was there & took me to see the old Css Kwekwitsch—the mother who is 84 & blind. She is a handsome old lady but feeble & was in bed—in the next room lay Aspasie & in the confusion she had been left alone– I heard her call & went to her help & stayed with her till Mlle Hellenbach came to take charge when I went back home to lunch. After lunch I returned & was given over charge of Aspasie who is also ill with influenza & very weak but I did not know it was influenza till abt 6 the Dss della Grazia called me out & advised me to go home & Css Canevaro brought me home in her gondola– When I got there this afternoon I saw the Montenegrin deputation arrive, five men in their gold embroidered garments. They had come to bring Olga their condolences & they are to take her & her mother’s remains tomorrow back to Montenegro. I sat also a little while with Olga who was composed but sad—she could not cry & it was that made her suffer most– We dined at 7 & then went to the Rossini to see the Barbiere de Siviglia very creditably done. Mr Malcolm joined us there.
