19 April 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 19th April [1892]. Copied for Henry all the morng. Went out after lunch with Henry & Sir Henry Thompson. We called on Mrs Bronson & had tea there. Mr Brown dined with us & all was pleasant & happy until suddenly Sir Henry Thompson was taken very ill– He was sitting next his son & he began to drop onto his shoulder & say I let you know because I feel I am going. We all jumped up horrorstruck. The girls left the room– Sir Henry did not become unconscious—he said he felt sick & called for a basin & then vomitted tremendously. The long hall was prepared for Trios & Mr Edens cane sofa was prepared for him. I at once dragged it into the dining room & after a while he was got on to it. In the meanwhile the guests began to arrive. We hoped to get Sir Henry downstairs to his room—but it soon became evident that he was very ill & cd not be moved. We gave up the music & kept the guests in the front drawing rooms– The girls gave them tea. At last abt 10 Belmondo, Brown, Cd Agostini, the gondoliers & Mr Thompson carried Sir Henry downstairs on his sofa & got him to bed. Dr Cini had arrived—& all said it was a threatening of a stroke—but Sir Henry would take no remedies. Belmondo remained the night & we went to bed leaving the patient to his son & Belmondo. Sir Henry was like a naughty child when any remedies were proposed & his son was too afraid of him to assist. Cini left shrugging his shoulders at his obstinacy.
