23 May 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 23rd May [1892]. Sat again for my portrait. Sr Trombini came to arrange about tonight’s serenade—the music, the lamps &c. Mr Bainbridge lunched with us & took leave as he takes off poor Mr Hodgson with him to England tomorrow. He is now sufficiently recovered to travel & is to be put in confinement in England as he is quite insane as were also 2 of his brothers who died so. At 4 went with the girls & Henry & Hatzfeldt to the Duchess della Grazia’s to their lawn tennis. The weather looked unsettled which caused us anxiety as we wanted to go out the evening with our Café Chantant (C.C.) band to serenade our friends on the canal—& especially for the benefit of the Hatzfeldts. It began to blow a little after dinner & we were debating whether we should go out or not when Mr Moore arrived to say Edith Bronson sent to excuse herself. However as the Dss della Grazia & her daughter Marie, & Mme & Alba Stefani arrived soon after 9 & it was not raining we determined to start & set off at 10 & stopping at various houses on the way up we arrived under Mrs Bronsons abt 12. We had a large piatta or barge which held our chairs & music stands well & was rowed by 3 men. The wind fell a bit but soon after we got to Mrs Bronsons a thunderstorm & heavy rain came on & we had to take refuge there. We found a good many people assembled and refreshments provided. Henry & Hatzfeldt hurried home to avoid a wetting. They sent us back the gondola but I & the girls had to wait till nearly one for it by some mistake. Prince Friederich Carl Hohenlohe came out to the serenade & then Baby took him to the station & he left by the 11.40 train for Germany.
