16 September 1892 — Lienz
Friday. 16th [September 1892]. Breakfast abt 7.30 & then our good hostess took us to the top of the house to show us the view over the town wh was very picturesque. She told us that the hotel was an ancient castle which had been 200 years in her family of the name of Kranz & she was the last & a widow. We went all day thro’ a beautiful country past Villach to Marbourg. Not being sure of our instructions how to get to Brunnsee the chateau of the Duke Della Grazia we only registered our luggage & took our tickets to Marbourg but the guard of the train was very civil and arranged for us to go on to Spielfeld 3 stations beyond & there we were to change & find a train for Westersfeldt. To our great delight & surprise on arriving at Spielfeld abt 6.30 we found the Duke there. He had driven over with his son & daughter in law the P. & Pss Villafranco to put them into the train for Gratz as they had to leave & he took us back to Brunnsee in their places. We went a good pace with 4 horses & arrived in abt ¾ hour. At the door the Dss and her 3 unmarried daughters received us– Bertha & the luggage went on by train to Westersfeldt & did not arrive here until after we had gone down to dinner. I was tired & headachy & could only take a cup of tea & we were all glad to go to bed at 10 after sitting chatting. We had charming rooms & a nice sitting room.
