22 September 1892 — Brunnsee Castle, nr. Spielfeld
Thursday. 22nd September [1892]. Breakfast at 8 & I went down to the garden where I found the Duchess & took a walk with her & then we sat for an hour in the Pavilion working till dinner at 12. After dinner we worked while the gentlemen smoked. At 2 went to our own rooms & I read aloud to Henry. At 4 dressed & went down to the garden for gouter. It was the Duchess day of reception & several neighbours came to play lawn tennis amongst them Admiral & Mme Pitner & their son & I played 3 sets & won 2. Came in at 6 o’cl. Read aloud to Henry. Packed up so as to start tomorrow morning. The Prince de Sistria a French nobleman arrived to stay with our hosts. Supper at 8. In the evening one of the girls who come to learn cooking at the castle played the Zither to us very well. It appears that the young ladies of the bourgeosie pay the cooks of the great houses for cooking lessons & are called “Lehrfraulein.” Here the Duchess gives them food & lodging & they stay sometimes 6 months. The one at Brunnsee now played the Zither very well & we were all intent on her music when suddenly Ola left the room. I saw something was wrong so I followed & found her ½ fainting. I got her round a little & then we put her to bed– The Duke & Duchess della Grazia were much concerned & would not hear of our setting out of our journey tomorrow so we agreed to remain till Saturday.
