21 September 1892 — Brunnsee Castle, nr. Spielfeld
Wednesday. 21st September [1892]. Breakfast at 8 & at 10.30 the Dss fetched me & we went for a walk in the garden. Dinner at 12 & we sat talking in the smoking room for an hour. The Duke brought out a bag of silver counters that his mother had received for the “Jeu du Roi.” One a rouleau not even opened. The custom had come from the time of Louis XIV. They are handsome medals octagonal shaped. I read aloud to Henry for an hour from Huxleys essays. Gouter at 4 & then the Duke drove us out in the carriage & 4—Henry, the Dss, Marie & I inside & Ola on the box. He drove us to the nearest little town called Mureck over the Mur on a primitive wooden bridge & we stopped under a fine castle on the hill above—then went back. He gave Ola a lesson in driving and brought us home thro’ the fields & by a wood where he preserves pheasants. On our return to Brunnsee we played tennis & came in at 6. I read aloud to Henry before supper at 8. In the evening the girls played piano duetts. We retired at 10 & Henry & I played patience for an hour.
