20 September 1892 — Brunnsee Castle, nr. Spielfeld
Tuesday. 20th September [1892]. Walked before breakfast at 12. Gouter at 4. A M. Pitner & his grandchildren 2 little girls arrived & we all played lawn tennis. The eldest child playing with me & playing very well. Ola tried to row poppe in the sandolo on the lake & was pretty successful. Dined at 8 & the Duchess played the harp to us in the eveng. After breakfast the Duke took Henry & me to see the Duchess de Berri’s apartment & it was most interesting. A collection of things in good & bad taste—& some very interesting relics of the old French royal family. What was specially interesting was the miniatures of different members—of Marie Antoinette, of Marie Theresa—of Louis XVII wh last is unique. A fine picture of the Queen Caroline of Naples by Mme Lebrun &c. The Duchess de Berri’s bedroom was interesting with a bed with fine embroidered hangings—but the room was full of holy pictures, relics, crosses, benitiers—& showing how dévote she must have become– The Duke enjoyed showing us & explaining every thing & spoke of his mother with the greatest admiration & we were most interested. There was one lovely little gilt benitier wh had belonged to Louis XIV—& behind a miniature of Marie Antoinette a niche of her hair.
