22 November 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 22nd November [1892]. I was better but got up latish. We lunched early & went Henry, Ola & I in gondola to the Favorita it was a lovely day & we had a charming walk by the seaside to the Baths & got into the gondola again at S. Eliza to come home. Ola had a toothache & had to go to bed on our return home. Stella is much better tho’ still in bed. Henry not so well his cough bad. On the way home from the Lido I called on Mrs Eden who is recovering from a bad attack of malarial fever– She looked very weak & ill. In the evening I went to Mrs Bronson’s. She had a party for D. Carlos & the Dss of Parma his wife. I had never had an opportunity of making her acquaintance & was glad to do so. Tho’ we had known D. Carlos for some time back we have always kept aloof from him on account of his scandalous way of living his wife is not even able to remain with him—but she now occasionally pays him a visit & I wished to show her the respect due to her. She is plain but pleasant & good natured. We had seen D. Carlos riding this afternoon on the sands a hideous old horse. As soon as I got to Mrs Bronson’s he came up to me & made self very pleasant & told me he had seen us on the Lido, that was riding an old horse he had found there for here & that he was going to bring his own horses there. He had a lighted cigar in his hand while talking & suddenly asked me if it gené to me. I said I did not much mind it—& cd bear a little smoke. He said he believed that English ladies were now less severe about smoking & that at their 5 o’c: tea they now even made men smoke. I said it might be so but I did not know of any that did so—but society was so large in England & there were so many different sets there might be one where such a thing happened. There was a Countess Carol Brazzà at Mrs Bronson’s an American lady who asked to make my acquaintance as she wished to talk to me about the Chicago Exhibition– She is organizing the Italian exhibits– I could not remain to listen to her as I wanted to get back to my invalids so she promises to come & see me early tomorrow morng.
