7 December 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 7th [December 1892]. Ola went off to breakfast out of doors. She left at 7.30 in the sandolo & went to the Fusina & a little way up the Brenta but was hindered going far by the ice. We are having still splendid weather. I wrote in the morning. At lunch we made arrangements for Stella to go to the evening train to meet her Parents who had telegraphed they were to arrive this evening. We came out to coffee talking & I went straight in the drawing room—there sat a man in the arm chair. I had a kind of idea it was Belmondo—but no! & turning round I recognised Mrs Dyer. She & her husband had arrived at 4 this morning & had come now to take us by surprise. I at once guessed their intention & going back into the hall where Henry & Stella were feeding the parrot I asked Stella to put down my work in the drawing room—& there she had her surprise & fell into the arms of her parents & hugged & kissed them with delight. Mrs Dyer had kindly brought me a dress bonnet & mantle from Paris & I had to try it on. Then Henry & I took out Stella for a walk & promised to leave her at the Grand Hotel with her mother on the way home. At the door at the hotel just going out so we took Stella home with us that she might read aloud as usual to Henry as they are in the midst of Ivanhoe. At abt 6 I read to him from the Memories de St Simon. Mr & Mrs Dyer, Stella & Mr Woods dined with us & I settled with Mr Woods that we are to have live pictures for our Christmas entertainment.
