23 January 1893 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 23rd January [1893]. I sat to Passini for my portrait which he hopes now to finish in 2 or 3 sittings. He has been ill with rheumatism in his leg ever since the last day I sat to him on 17th last Decr. This took up the morning. I got a telegram of condolence from the P. & Pss Adolf of Schaumberg Lippe & P. Fred Charles of Hesse & Pss Margaret of Prussia about dear Malcolm. How stupid a confusion in my mind! No it was dull & cold & we decided we would not go out & so I read aloud in the afternoon to Henry. Mrs Browning came to see me in the morng & I begged her to come & dine with us as she is still alone. This she did. Stella came to read to Henry & I practised guitar before dinner. Miss Holas came abt 5 to arrange about going tomorrow to Padua to meet Ola & bring her back from Vescovana.
