31 January 1893 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 31st January [1893]. Scirocco & foggy damp & chilly. Wrote in the morning. Directly after lunch Mrs Eden came to ask me to go with her to call on Mme Emma Levi whose visit I owed since last year. We walked off together leaving word for the gondola to fetch us with Ida Belmondo in it at 3.30. We went first to Mrs Dyer as we heard that Stella had been ill in the night she was better. We went on to the Ponte della Guerra & found that Mme Levi did not receive. We hastened back to the Traghetto of E. Samuele & saw our gondola still at Ida’s door opposite so we hailed it across and joined her & all 3 went to call on Mme Kraus wife of the Austrian Consul Gen. whose “day” it was. From there we went to Css Sormani Moretti’s but the tide was so low it was not easy to get there. All society was there. We remained some time. The sudden death of the Dss of Madrid yesterday was the great topic. She was only 46 & after going to mass as usual fell down dead of apoplexy. Just as I came in Mr Penrice arrived to call—& Mr Dyer came to see Henry– The Dss della Grazia & Marie also turned up having returned to town last night. She said she wd probably go to the Dss of Madrid’s funeral at Villareggia & start tonight.
