8 March 1893 — Florence
Wednesday. 8th March [1893]. Lovely day & splendid view over the valley. Sat talking to Mrs Ross all the morning while she painted one of her husband’s orchids of wh he has a very valuable collection. Lina Duff Gordon, Mrs Ross’ niece who was in Florence last night at a ball returned before lunch. A pretty graceful tall fair girl—the daughter of Sir Maurice Duff Gordon. After lunch Henry & I drove to Florence in a little open carriage which we hired. Henry had to see Sir Domenic Colnaghi so we went to his office. We also went to call on Css Michiel & gave her over a silver salver we had brought her from Venice wh she had bought from among Malcolm’s silver. We also went to a birdshop & there I bought a little green & grey paraqueet & gave 15 fcs for him. We returned to Poggio Ghirardo in time for 5 o’cl tea—& my bird was admired & proved to be very tame. As I bought him in a great hurry this is satisfactory. Dined at 7 & bed at 11.
