10 March 1893 — Florence
Friday. 10th [March 1893]. Weather not quite so fine– I walked with Mr Ross to the carpenter’s to order a perch for my new bird Bibi-Lina– Read aloud to Henry. Mr Clemens (Mark Twain) & his daughter Susie came to dinner. He has a mass of iron grey hair & a fine head almost too large for his short body. He speaks with a slow deliberate manner—almost solemn—but he told us very graphic & amusing stories. He made himself very agreeable. His daughter is a nice little homely plain little girl in evident admiration of her father. Mrs Clemens is a great invalid. They are living at a villa close by here.
