24 March 1893 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 24th [March 1893]. Ola in bed till the evening. I did not feel very well & towards five o’ck tried my temperature & found I had a good deal of fever– Lina Duff Gordon came from Florence to stay with us & arrived abt 2. I went to the station to fetch her. After a late lunch I went to the Eden’s garden with Henry to try & get some silver sand to make cuttings sent me by Lina from Mr Ross. The Dean of Wells (Dr Jex Blake) & his wife came to tea—also Ersilia Canevaro & Maria Cozzi. Ersilia found I looked ill & wanted me to go to bed—but I could not as we had Trios in the evening. Just before dinner Clara Montalba came to see me & stayed some time. In the evening Trombini, Tirindelli & Dini played & I turned over the leaves for Trom: but felt very ill & could hardly keep up. I did not feel ill for nothing that evening. The next day we sent for Dr Cini and he pronounced that I had a malaria fever—& I never moved out of bed for a whole month—nursed most devotedly by Ola & Bertha our cook. She sleeps still in my room at night & is most attentive.
