21 September 1893 — Rufford Abbey, Rufford, Nottinghamshire
Thursday. 21st September [1893]. Breakfast at 9.30– Ld Savile did not appear till later. He showed us over part of the house—& the chapel where Lady Arabella Stewart had been married. Then we went for a walk. Henry went with Mr Lumley, & I with Ld Savile. He took me to the school but it was 12 o’cl & the dinner hour—so we went on to the Manor Farm & the farmer’s sister Miss Manners showed over her dairy & explained abt the making of cheese & butter– After lunch we drove with Ld S. & Mr L. to Thoresby Lord Manvers’s place abt 5 miles off & in the middle of the Sherwood Forest. It is a modern house & a fine one– The present Lady Manvers is a fine old lady & was a Coigny—she had all the easy manners of a well born French woman. The trees in the Park & Forest are splendid & remind me of Robin Hood at every turn. Lady Beauchamp was staying with her parents—very pleasant looking. Lady Mary the other daughter was at home—a pretty girl with light hair & dark eyes & brows—very French looking. We had tea & went over the house & drove back to Rufford abt 6. It was rather cold. Mr & Lady Maud Rolleston & Miss Clayton East dined here.
