24 October 1893 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 24th October [1893]. I read aloud to the girls in the morning & played with Pamela on guitar. After lunch Henry, Nela & Pamela went off to Biraghi &c & I went in the sandolo with Lina & Ola & they left me at Mrs Eden’s garden. I found them both there. Pss Yturbide & Miss Crawford were there & stayed to tea. The Edens brought me home in their gondola. Henry took the girls to the theatre. Ola dined at the Hultons. Lina stayed with me & we had a long talk over her life. She poor girl is miserably poor– Her father came into a fortune of £10,000 a year & ran thro’ it in less than 2 years & Lina is left with £3,000 left her by an aunt—& never receives 1d from her father. Luckily she has a good uncle & Aunt in the Rosses–
