21 November 1893 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 21st [November 1893]. We went to the studio at 10. Having no model today we tried vainly to paint chrysanthemums. Telegraphed to the Empress Frederick for her birthday—but we are not sure that the telegram will reach her as there is a general strike all over Italy among the telegraph clerks on account of an injustice arrangement wh has just been issued whereby the clerks are to deposit 500 fcs when first appointed—as a guarantee.
