8 January 1894 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 8th [January 1894]. I went off to the studio after breakfast. Found the old woman was very ill in bed—so got Ola to take her some broth in afternoon. When she went out with Henry, Maria Cozzi called for me & took me to call on the new Countess Marcello—wife of Ct Girolamo. She is abt 30 handsome & dignified. It was the 1st time I had been to the house since the death of Css Andriana. It looked cleaner & more comfortable—& better kept—but the stairs to get up to it are very high & steep. I heard there of the death of Mr Gilbert Neville who had been for the last 4 years out of his mind. He owned a foundry here & had made the 2 iron bridges—one near the Academica the other near the station. He had married a Css Albrizzi who was desperately in love with him. He was a protestant & never swerved. She was a devoted wife & never left him & wd not allow him to be taken to a mad house—altho’ at times he was violent. Read aloud to Henry. Music in eveng.
