29 January 1894 — Naples
Monday. 29th January [1894]. Wrote letters in morning. After lunch we took a 2 horse cab & went for a drive. Left cards on the Dss of Ravaschieri & then on the B. Consul & went for a drive to Portiri. On the way we passed a priest bearing the host to some sick person in procession with a silk parasol carried over him with people bearing lighted lamps & the priest in his robes. As they passed a barracks the sentinel presented arms & the priest stopped & turning to the barracks held up the Host for adoration to the assembled soldiers. Meanwhile the drivers of the various vehicles on the road took off their hats & the pedestrians kneeled. On the way back we saw a funeral preparing to start from a house– A band & the confraternities in blue & white with hoods & masks & lighted tapers. The coffin was a gaudy red & gold one hired for the occasion in all probability. It was past 5 when we got back to the hotel. The sun was setting & it was chilly. The seawall drive was crowded with carriages it being the fashionable hour for driving. At dinner sat next a gentleman, English, young & nice looking who said he had just come back from the Zambesi where he is probably an employe. He said he suffers much from malarial fever there.
