30 January 1894 — Naples
Tuesday. 30th January [1894]. We went off to the Museum before 10 & went thro’ the ground floor, examined the Pompeiian paintings & part of the sculpture. Home to lunch at 1. After lunch we had a visit from the Dss Ravaschieri, very friendly & kind & she promised to take us to see her brother Prince Filangieri’s collection of curiosities at the Palazzo on Saty next at 10.30 & also to see a Dormitory she has this week instituted for waifs & strays. Bertha & I took a walk to make some little purchases. Returned at 5. Had tea. Read Saint Simon to Henry. The Dss Ravaschieri is middle aged rather plain but with a kind face & genial manner. She understands English well but prefers to speak French as she says she had little practise in English. She devotes her life & energies to doing good—& is much helped by a german widow Meuricoffre who has a fine villa in the suburbs.
