7 February 1894 — Naples
Wednesday. 7th [February 1894]. We started at 10 oclock in an open carriage with 2 horses & drove to Baia. We went by the Pico di Grotto road by Bagnoli & Pozzoli & then turned off by Arco Felice & on the Cuma road to see the ruins & arrived at Baia at 10.30. Stopped at the Victoria a kind of Restaurant where we had an excellent lunch of oysters from the Lake of Fusara—macaroni—& some fried soles—all excellent & fresh & well cooked– The day was simply splendid– There was a little breeze on the sea but we were quite sheltered from it by the hills all day. We stopped to see the temple ruins at Pozzoli & we took a walk at Baia while our horses were resting. The Restaurant where we lunched was rather amusing– Being Ash Wedy it was a kind of fête & the people had come out from Naples to enjoy themselves. There were several parties at different tables dining & at one a great deal of wine was consumed & an elderly gentleman got very talkative. Whenever a fresh party came in to the room he insisted upon making all of them drink to his health in his glass. In the meanwhile 2 musicians came in. An old man with a mandoline & a boy of abt 10 with a guitar. They stood with their backs to the wall & played. Now & again the boy sang lustily & with great spirit—a true voice wh wd have been good had he not sung thro’ his nose. We left Baia abt 2 & came back to the Hotel by a little after 4 having taken the Posillipo road back– Rested. Had tea. Read to Henry. Sir Domenic & Katie Colnaghi came to dine with us at 8 in the restaurant– I was tired & giddy & went early to bed.
