13 February 1894 — Naples
Tuesday. 13th [February 1894]. Packed in the morng. Lunch at 12.30 & went off by 1.30 train to Salerno. Weather sciroccale & looks like a change. It was somewhat cloudy & windy. We reached Salerno abt 4 & went to the Albergo d’Inghilterra & found very comfortable rooms & a very civil landlord. We then sallied out to see the cathedral & looked at the fine pulpit with its mosaic works & down to the crypt where were the bones of S. Andrew. The town of Salerno is close on the sea & the waves beat against the road– There is a little harbour formed by a sea wall built out. Read aloud to Henry. Dined at 7.30 & had an excellent dinner with maccaroni & we enjoyed the quiet & simplicity of the hotel after the noise, glare & indifferent cooking of the smart Grand Hotel at Naples.
