15 February 1894 — Salerno
Thursday. 15th [February 1894]. Left Salerno abt 10 o’cl & went by train to Taranto. It was very cold & there was a great deal of snow on the high hills about Potenza– A very interesting journey thro’ a barren country thro’ many tunnels & small towns stuck up here & there on the tops of hills. We reached Taranto abt 4. Found the coachman of the fly ready for us & while they were putting our luggage on the carriage we got some hot coffee & then set off in the fly for Leucaspide an hour’s drive. We went for some way on the high road to Bari & then went thro’ olive groves along a road thro’ different private properties till we came to an imposing building perched on a slight elevation built of very white stone with a loggia running the whole length of it; we drove round it & entered by a back door into a little court yard & then got out & went up a little interior stairs. I found dear old Sir James ready to welcome us. He took us to our rooms which were at the end of a row of rooms & outside a loggia– We dined at 6. He had staying with him 2 nephews D. Eugenio Arno & Signor Topiccoli also Mrs & Miss Granville. The latter is supposed to be a ward of his & is a great deal with him. The house is a long building with nine or ten rooms leading out of each other—no passages—but the loggia serves for one when necessary. I had a stove in my room– Henry had none & felt the cold at night. They played whist in the evening & I went early to bed.
