16 February 1894 — Leucaspide, nr. Taranto
Friday. 16th February [1894]. Henry had a bad night & did not get up for breakfast which was at 8.30. It was very cold & rather grey. Henry got up at 10. Did not go out in the morning. After lunch walked with our host, Henry & Signor Topiccoli in the garden & eat oranges off the trees. It was very cold & windy & Sir James & Henry did not stay out long. I went a little walk with Signor Topiccoli & he explained to me how wild olive trees are brought into cultivation & what improvements Sir James had made on the property. He also showed me the chariot wheel tracks in the stones near the house which showed where a Roman road had existed. The stone is very thinly covered here & there with earth & in order to plant olives Sir James is having holes cut in it in different places to make holes for the trees.
