22 February 1894 — Rome
Thursday. 22nd February [1894]. I walked to the Hotel de Russie in the Piazza Popolo to see Lady Bagot. On the way I met Katie B. & she took me with her. Found Lady B not very well– Has tendency to bronchitis. Sat with her an hour & then returned to our hotel for luncheon. Henry had been to the English Consul’s to get some papers signed. In afternoon we took an open carriage & drove to leave cards at the Embassy—& then to call on Mme de Hurtado. She was out but we found Idita Bentivoglio & went in to see her & Mme Hurtado returned & we spent some time there. Went after to call on Olga Mocenigo but did not find her. The Hurtados have hired a lovely house the Villino Buon compagni in the Via Veneto. Mr Hurtado is now Columbian Minister here to the King & they are both very happy here. We dined at 7 o’cl table d’hôte. After dinner we invited the Dean & Mrs Wickham to pay us a visit & have coffee in our room which they did—& were very pleasant. Mr Wickham is very lame & uses a stick to walk with. Just as we were going out in the afternoon the Dss of Sermoneta came to the door to enquire to me & asked us to dinner on Monday. She was looking as beautiful as ever–
