21 February 1894 — Salerno
Wednesday. 21st [February 1894]. Left Salerno after a dejeuner à la fourchette at 11 by a train wh left at 12. At Naples we found the train the fast express for Rome wh leaves at 2.15. Lord Lansdowne left by the same train on his return from being V. Roy of India. We reached Rome at 6. Went to Hotel d’Angleterre where we had ordered rooms on 3no. Got just in time for 7 o’cl table d’hôte. Hotel seems very full– Revd Mr Pullen who is editing Murray’s Handbook for Rome was at table & saluted us. As we came out of dinner the Dean of Lincoln & Mrs Wickham stopped us. She née Miss Gladstone claimed old acquaintance with Henry.
