24 February 1894 — Rome | |
Saturday. 24th February [1894]. We were ready dressed at 9 o’cl & down stairs waiting at 10 o’cl when Signor Barnabei called to take us out to see the new Museum that he has arranged at a lovely little villa just outside the Porta del Popolo in a lovely little villa formerly the property of the Popes & still known as the Villa Papa Giulio. It was just beyond the Borghese Villa & gardens– The winding stairs which leads up to the upper floor is a gentle ascent which probably the Pope performed on his donkey. The rooms are painted with Raffaelesque designs as is the portico which runs round the inside of the ground floor. Sr Barnabei explained to us the Museum had been made so as to show the exact way the things had been found & the different uses of the objects were clearly shown– A small temple had been erected in the garden to show exactly the proportions & uses of each part that had been found. Besides this we saw a very pretty sunk garden of the 16th century with fountains & decorative figures which had belonged the Villa of Pope Giulio. We returned to our hotel to luncheon—& parted with Sr Barnabei who is the Director of all the antiquarian researches & was very proud to show Henry all the new arrangements & to have his approval of it. Donna Laura Minghetti came to see us & sat with us while we were at lunch which we had in a small room apart. She was most kind & affe & we talked much of our dear friend Morelli as we had never met since his death. Later in afternoon Henry & I walked to Hotel de Russie to see Lady Bagot. Dined at table d’hôte– | |
