19 July 1894 — Chenies | |
Thursday. 19th [July 1894]. I got up for breakfast for the first time since I came here & Augusta & I went up to town by 10.24 train & arrived at Baker St at 10.17– The carriage met us & I went home to No 1 Queen Ann St. Augusta went off on business of her own– As in a dream I went into our now so empty house. Ola Du Cane came to meet me & helped me to collect what things I wanted. She & I lunched at 1– Blanche came in to see me for a short time & Louis Du Cane joined us at lunch & then he & I talked business– He is now my solicitor & sees after my affairs. The Dyer family came at 2 & I had an interview with them & told them how Henry had in those last days told me to be sure to buy one of Mr Dyer’s pastels—& begged them to let me do so—as a sort of legacy to Stella of whom Henry was so fond. They agreed on the condition the picture should be given to the Huguenot or some other Society. When they had taken leave of me (as they are soon leaving England) I returned to the Library. Louis had fetched a Commissioner of Oaths & before him I signed all the necessary papers for duty &c & Henry’s will– All still as in a dream. Lady Gregory came for me at 3 & we returned to Baker St Station & left by 3.37 train for Chorley Wood & were at Chenies for 5 o’clock tea. | |
