26 July 1894 — Chenies | |
Thursday. 26th [July 1894]. I went up to town by 10.24 train with Nurse and had the carriage to take me home. Ola joined me & we went on to Marshall & Snelgroves. Edward came as soon as I returned to talk business & we opened the drawers of Henry’s bureau & looked for papers & found the beginning of the Memoir of his life which I took away to read– Then came a worse trial– The valuer came & asked to look into all the drawers & cupboards to see for books &c & I had to open everything to this stranger. It tore my heart to touch the keys which Henry had never left out of his own hands & it seemed like sacrilege to touch anything. I went upstairs to our rooms & went into his room & opening a drawer came on the fan we had used to fan him with in these last days & it all came back on me like a flood. There was also a gauze veil of mine I had used to cover him with while he slept that the flies shd not disturb him! Maria came before lunch & went with me to Dr Lawson abt my eyesight which since my last years typhoid has been less good. He told me what spectacles to use & said there was not much the matter with my sight. Louis came after the valuer had gone & made me sign necessary cheques. Blanche came to tea & Maria returned to Chenies with Nurse & me– This has been a most trying day & I am now beginning more to realize my loss. Just 3 weeks today– Alas! | |
