13 August 1894 — Devonshire House, Weymouth
Monday. 13th [August 1894]. We took a walk at 10 o’cl. It was windy & the sun very hot. I got a letter from Miss Hogarth telling me Mrs Foster was dead—the widow of Henry’s old friend John Foster. She had been an invalid for years. Lunched at 1 & then accompanied Connie to the station & saw her off to London by 2.20 train & then came home & wrote & read. Once more I am alone—& hope now to be quiet a while to be able to think over all the past 4 months. I dined at 7.30 & played patience in the evening for the first time since I played by Henry’s bedside to amuse him. I want to do the things we used to do together. Connie & I had a long talk over our young days. How unhappy our home was owing to our mother’s 2nd marriage & all the fightings that were the consequence of it– Constance was always in the wars & we certainly none of us had a happy home & were all glad to get away. I remember my astonishment at the happiness of my life when I married & the peace of our little home 21 Grafton St with only loving words & looks—& all those 25 years we never had one quarrel—tho’ I was sometimes pettish—his temper was marvellous.
