12 September 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Wednesday. 12th September [1894]. Down at 9. Don Juan Riaño left then for Madrid. His wife left at 10 & went North to stay at Lord Armstrongs—& now I am quite alone here for the first time & how empty it is! I went down to the library & arranged the drawers of Henry’s writing table—in the middle of it poor old Sir James Lacaita called—the dear old man still very feeble & suffering came kindly to see after me & we had a long talk. He urged me to keep on the Venice Life—if only I was to go there a month in the year & this is a comfort & help to me just when my brothers & sisters want to try to persuade me to give up Venice. We also talked over the question of Henry’s Memoirs. He urges me to wait a year or two till Gladstone goes in the course of nature & then—to publish the whole story as written by Henry. Just as he left me Alice Murray came—she stayed a little while & then went to lunch at Pk Crescent where Ola arrived today. I lunched alone—& then Mrs Rate came for an hour & her girl Enid joined her & they returned to Milton. I then went in a hansom to Rigal’s to order a blouse—& came straight back– Had tea & then walked to Wigmore Street to buy some wool to knit. Ola came in for a few minutes before dinner. Mr Rate dined with me & we had much talk on business & he gave me kind advice & help– Today Roberts the butler returned to his work having recovered his severe illness.
