11 September 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Tuesday. 11th [September 1894]. The Riaños & I breakfasted at 9. Mr R went out for the day. Emilia & I went to Marshall & Snelgroves’ & other shops before lunch. Louis Du Cane came to see me & promised to come again before dinner with papers for me to sign. Lunch at 1.30 & then Emilia & I went off to the British Museum. Sir Wollaston Franks & his assistant Mr Reed showed us round their departments & Mr Murray took us on to the Assyrian sculptures &c & was very kind & attentive. We then drove abt 4.30 to Barr’s shop near Covent Garden. Mr Barr was not there so we went home to tea leaving a message to ask him to follow us which he soon did. He is a nice blunt selfmade man with a nice Scotch accent. I told him how much I had heard of his bulbs &c &c from Css Pisani & we had a pleasant talk—then Pamela Bruce came & stayed an hour till Louis came with his papers which I finished just in time for dinner. Juan Riaño fils & old Mr Gayangos dined with us & went off early in the evening—& we went to bed.
