29 September 1894 — Villa Pisani, Vescovana
Saturday. 29th [September 1894]. It was a very oppressive night & about 8 in morning there came up a thunderstorm with heavy rain which cooled the air wonderfully. I helped the Countess to put up fresh flowers & went out to bring in large sprays of american golden rod—michaelmas daisy &c. Soon after 12 arrived from Venice Profr & Mrs Foster & their daughter introduced by Mr Herbert Thompson. Ola also came from Venice. Profr Foster is Profr of physiology at Cambridge—& a great gardener. So after lunch the Css took him round her garden & I accompanied them. He gave her some valuable hints & was interested to know how many things can be grown here which cannot succeed in England. We had tea at 4 & then drove out to see the farms also a novelty to the Fosters & we returned in time for dinner at 7 after which they returned by train to Venice. Ola remains here & we return to Venice on Monday.
