12 November 1894 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 12th November [1894]. Breakfasted in bed & got up late. Ponsonbys went out in the morning to Mercato &c. After lunch I went out in gondola with Blanche & Edward to Rietti’s & to Favenza’s where Blanche left Edward & me & returned home. Favenza was very much moved on seeing me. He is one of the oldest antiquity vendors & said he had known Henry so many years here. He told us that being 80 & having only nephews he felt it is better not to leave too much for them to settle after his death & that he is therefore giving away a great many of his fine things to different museums, churches &c—& that it is a pleasure to do it in one’s life time & to see the things put in their places. He had very little therefore left. From Favenza’s I took Edward to look at some pictures he thought of buying by Zais & then came home & I went up to my own room & had tea there with Pss Olga of Montenegro while downstairs Ersilia Canevaro & Carry Eden had tea with the Ponsonbys & Trombini came & played accompaniments for Blanche & Ersilia to sing.
