28 December 1894 — Cairo
Friday. 28th [December 1894]. No news of our luggage yet & we begin to get uneasy. Elaine & HG drove in to the town in the morng. After lunch she & I took a drive. We went on the Shubra road to the Ciccolani Villa—which must be very pretty in spring. We just drove round the villa & then back again. The coachman took us by Shepherds Hotel & the centre of the town. We saw some Egyptian ladies driving out of their houses in a brougham—veiled & with two running footmen before their carriage. We also passed Prince Hassan Pasha driving himself in a phaeton with an escort of soldiers & an outrider clearing the way—but the motley crowd! The costumes, the picturesque rags! The people of all colours! It was bewildering—& one can hardly take it in—& feel as if one must be in an Arabian night’s dream from which one must soon awake. If only I had seen it all with Henry how we should have enjoyed it together! We returned from our drive abt 5 & had tea & then read till dinner at 7.30.
