30 December 1894 — Cairo
Sunday. 30th [December 1894]. Elaine & I went across the Nile by the steam boat to get to church at 10.30. We took a carriage on the other bank but were rather late. Walked back to the boat after service. After lunch I took a carriage & drove to Shubra to see Princess Nazli Khanum our old friend of Constantinople. We had not met since those days & we had much to say to each other—she had remained faithful to her friendship & spoke gratefully of Henry’s kindness to her. She is not much altered except that she has grown a little stouter. I stayed an hour with her & then drove straight back to Ghesireh. I found Lady Victoria & Miss Lambton with Elaine but they left before 5. We found that H.G. was still in bed having got a bad cold. He got up for dinner & we dined together & sat in the hall of the hotel while the band plays in the evening.
