31 December 1894 — Cairo
Monday. 31st December [1894]. Breakfast in my room at 8. Read aloud to Elaine & began Gibbon’s “Decline.” H.G. is better & up today lunched with us at one in the Restaurant. Afterwards we watched an Indian conjuror who had 3 snakes with him but we were disappointed at not seeing the snakes perform. Elaine went out with her brother in afternoon. I remained in doors. They returned to tea at 5 & Lady Mary Lygon came to tea. H.G. dined out & went to the Opera. Elaine & I had quiet evening & went to bed at 11—& so ends this sad year.
