6 February 1895 — Luxor
Wednesday. 6th February [1895]. Elaine & I escorted by Roberts started at 10 in the ferry boat—went across the Nile & found donkeys ready for us to ride to Deir el Bahri. We had to ford the smaller branch of the river which is now getting low. When we were here first in the “Mohammed Ali” we were taken across in a boat. There was some wind blowing & the sand made a kind of haze. The sun was hot. We were very kindly received by M. Naville & found Mr Benson & Mr Bevan with him. They had spent the night there. Mr N. showed us the temple in detail & explained all to us. In some places the decorations & paintings were very fresh & beautiful. Abt 12 we had lunch in the mud house in which the explorators live. In the corner of the room there lay a mummy in its inner case which had been discovered only 3 days ago—& when we had eaten M. Naville showed us two others found at the same time. They had been found under the floor of the temple & were the mummies of a priest & his mother & sister. The outer cases were square & like a sort of bier with handles to carry them by. After lunch we took leave of our host & rode on to Medinet Abou where excavation was also being carried on. There we were not even troubled by a guardian & wandered about at our will– We rode back by the Colossi to the ferry & got to the hotel abt 4. Had tea & rested & wrote letters till dinner.
