9 February 1895 — On the Nile | |
Saturday. 9th February [1895]. We arrived at Bellianah last night & early this morning all the party except 6 went off to Abydos. It was such a long ride & so hot that Elaine & I gave it up & remained on board sketching. “Charlie’s Aunt” remained & turned out to be a most entertaining & witty old thing. An old artist called Carpenter who interested himself in Elaine’s drawing & helped her. The party came back abt 4 & after tea we started again on our journey & stopped for the night at Assiout. Some of the party took the train here & Elaine got a cabin to herself. | |
