5 March 1895 — Cairo | |
Tuesday. 5th March [1895]. Henry’s birthday– This day last year I still had him & we were at Florence together—& could not foresee that we should not be apart. I have dreaded this day & somehow I have found a means of getting thro’ it—for I have been busy for others. First—Lady Ashburton came up to breakfast in the tea house on the terrace & Lady Victoria showed her so plainly that she was not wanted that I had to go & smooth matters. Lady Ashburton had sat herself down to sketch & let her breakfast get cold—in her dudgeon. She had to be coaxed from her drawing & her milk made hot again. Then after lunch I fell to talking with Mrs Hitchins & she opened her heart to me over her anxieties about her son—so I went to her room & sat with her & tried to comfort her & later I found Miss Arbuthnot in her room with red eyes over her difficulties with her Aunt Lady Ashburton & had to cheer her & then administer remedies to her as she was not well—& so I had little time to think of myself—& am thankful. | |
