29 March 1895 — Cairo | |
Friday. 29th March [1895]. Arranged packing &c– At 11 Elaine, Aline & I went across the Nile by steam ferry & drove on they 2 to the Bazaars & I to Cooks to get & pay for our tickets. I met Mr Cartwright on the way & he accompanied me. I then drove to the Bazaars & met the girls & finding they had more to do left them & went to pay Nazli a farewell visit. I found an old lady sitting with her—in the black silk mantle of the Arab ladies. I thence went to see Frida Biddulph & bid her goodbye & then went to the ferry at Boulac & went across to Ghesireh to lunch. The girls came home after me. After lunch I did a drawing in Katherine Arbuthnot’s Album which took me till 4.30 then went out. Had tea with Aline. Elaine was sketching & could not be persuaded to come away. I then went to paint near the Harem but could not finish my sketch. Took a walk along the road with Aline to look for a plant I wanted to get. We picked some of it & found out from the gardener that it was called “morandia.” Mr Donald Cameron dined with us. Lord Egerton dined with a friend but K. Arbuthnot joined our party with the Lambtons. Sat in the drawing room & talked to Mr & Miss Cartwright who had been dining with Mr Friedmann. Lady Vica took Katherine A. to the dance in the Casino. I deposited Lady Ashburton in her room & we all retired. | |
