30 March 1895 — Cairo
Saturday. 30th [March 1895]. We left Ghesireh Palace Hotel at a little after 10 took leave of the Lambtons and drove to the station to leave Cairo for Ismailia by 11.15 train. Mr Donald Cameron came to see us off and brought us each a lovely bouquet of roses. Lady Cromer is going to England at the same time as we go to Brindisi & she kindly offered us seats with her in the saloon carriage. A crowd of her colleagues came to the station to see her off & she had many bouquets. The Misses Churchill came to speed Elaine & the eldest girl Daisy announced her engagement to a Capt. Williams. Lord Cromer accompanied his wife as far as Ismailia. They gave us an excellent cold luncheon. Elaine & Lady C. played [illegible word] patience & then Lord Cromer showed us how to play “Bismarck” patience. He reminds me so much of Henry in his ways even to patience playing & from a rather stern abrupt manner he softened & brightened & became very pleasant. He advised us not to stop at Ismailia to wait for the Caledonia so we decided to go on to Port Said with Lady C. & sleep there. He saw us off by the train & was to return by train at 6 to Cairo. We made tea & watched the sunset and arrived at Port Said at abt 8 & went to the Eastern Exchange Hotel. Lady C. went to stay with the P&O agent. We found the hotel clean & comfortable. A lift constantly going up & down & the stairs not used. Elaine went at once to bed. I went to dine below.
