2 April 1895 — En route to Venice
Tuesday. 2nd [April 1895]. Breakfasted in my cabin & got up to lunch. Passed Crete & sketched Mount Ida as we went by. Saw snow for the 1st time this winter. We arrived at Brindisi at abt 4 just after tea. Took leave of Ld Tatton & Dss of Buckingham who go on to Marseilles. The consul passed our luggage thro’ the customs with Lady Cromers so we had no trouble. Lady C. went to the Hotel to rest. Elaine & I wandered about & walked to the station. The servants went by the usual train & started before us. Elaine & I went by P&O express as far as Bologna & had places in the sleeping car. Just as the train was starting we learned that there had been an accident. The carriage in which the consul Sr Mocatta, Lady Cromer & her maid were driving to the station had been overturned & everybody had been hurt. The maid called me to the compartment saying Lady C. had broken her arm– There she sat with her dress off, her arm swelled & in great pain. The maid had a large bump on her cheek—the consul a cut on his face. The train was delayed while a Dr was fetched & he & the consul came to Bari with us. We bathed Lady Cromer’s arm with iced water & when at last the Dr came to dress it he found that it was not broken tho’ badly twisted. He bound it in starch bandages & we put her to bed and gave her some food & she was able to proceed to London. Elaine & I dined in the restaurant car—& slept well altho’ we were 4 ladies in the compartment.
