26 June 1895 — Devonshire House, Weymouth
Wednesday. 26th [June 1895]. Breakfast in bed at 8 & then read. Bertha my cook came to give me warning she wished to leave. I was much upset as I have a great regard for her—but by now I am resigned & indifferent—altho’ I had hoped she cared for me & wd have stayed. She objects to returning to Venice & gives that as her only reason. I daresay poor woman, it bores her to be there, & why should she be bored for my sake. She is quite right & I am stupid to mind. I wrote letters read & embroidered. Went out after tea & sat in the Green Hill Gardens & painted a little. Played patience after dinner.
